Self-awareness. Practical Personal Transformation.
Your level of self-awareness affects how you relate to yourself, others, and the world around you!
Hi, I'm Myrna. Let me explain what I mean:
See, self-awareness is about understanding both the visible and invisible aspects of ourselves and how it influences our behavior.
Let's use the iceberg as an analogy. When you look at a large iceberg, often what is visible is only about 20% of the total iceberg. Between 75% - 80% of the iceberg is submerged.
Let's compare that with ourselves as people: 20% of what is visible to others about ourselves are our behaviors - the things we say and do.
A staggering 80% of who we are and what drives our behavior are not visible to the naked eye. It is not known to others, and if we are not self-aware, not even known to us!
Sobering Truth:
The 80% that is not visible to others, is often also not known to us but is the biggest influencers of our decisions, behaviors, and interactions.
Let me share a story:
Very early on in my career, I worked myself to a state of burnout. I worked 60 - 80 hour weeks. I was determined to "succeed" and work my way up the corporate ladder.
This situation became so bad, that I ended up in hospital for about 3 weeks - lung infection and pneumonia!
Why did this happen? Only after deep introspection and self-reflection did I have some insights.
I understood Why:
- I was fearful that I was not good enough and that my efforts will not be noticed.
- Because I was rejected for my "dream job", I felt I had to prove myself.
- I had difficulty saying no and setting clear boundaries.
- I only felt excepted when I went beyond my call of duty.
- Perfectionism: I was never happy with my first, or even second try. Nothing was ever good enough for me.
Does some or all of my experience resonate with you?
